VITAL Alaska: Where Bears, Badasses, and Breakthroughs Collide

Kenai Peninsula Adventure | August 26-30, 2025

"One word to describe your team experience?"

Seussical. Inspiring. Badass. Fabulous. Blessed.

These aren't words you typically find in a trip recap. But then again, VITAL Adventures isn't your typical adventure company.

The Setup: Three Months of Showing Up

Here's what we know about big adventures: they don't start when you board the plane. They start when you commit—three months out, on a random Tuesday, when you're staring at a training plan wondering if you're actually going to do this.

For our Kenai crew of 13 (ranging from 18 to their 70s—yes, really), "doing this" meant:

  • 129 miles of combined training hikes and Kenai miles

  • 21,700 feet of elevation gain over three months

  • Progressive weekend hikes that started at 4 miles in Month 1 and built to 16 miles by Month 3

  • Weekly strength and endurance training

  • Sunday team emails with long hike summaries and Zoom updates

  • A whole lot of consistency over perfection

The feedback? "Everything was laid out for a successful result." One participant nailed it: "Training works and I did it!"

But here's the honest truth from the trail: not everyone followed the plan to the letter. Some had their own trainers. Some modified. And you know what? They still showed up ready. Because VITAL isn't about rigid perfection—it's about meeting people where they are and getting them adventure-ready, whatever that looks like for them.

The lesson we're taking forward? More accountability touchpoints. More check-ins. Maybe even a weekly Zoom strength class to keep the momentum going. Because while the structure is solid, the magic happens when we show up together.

The Experts Who Made It Real

Katie and Justin Libby: Alaska's Endurance Legends

Justin has us smiling as we take on the epic Lost Lake hike - even with the rain, wind, and rigor!

When you want to understand Alaska, you don't just hire guides—you find people who've lived it. Katie and Justin aren't just knowledgeable locals; they're wildly accomplished Alaska endurance athletes who've pushed their limits across some of the state's most demanding terrain.

They didn't just show us trails. They showed us what it means to respect the land, read the weather, embrace the unpredictable, and keep going when conditions get gnarly. Our crew learned what it's like to commune with nature at Alaska's pace which, as it turns out, includes rain, mist, and the occasional weather curveball that makes summit views even sweeter when they finally appear.

Sarah from Accurate Advantage: Bear Safety Real Talk

Let's address the elephant, or rather, the bear, in the room. Alaska has bears. Big ones. And if you're going to hike these trails, you need to know what you're doing.

Sarah from Accurate Advantage delivered the bear safety training that turned nervous energy into confident awareness. One participant captured the transformation perfectly: "Given all the fear I had about seeing any bear on the trip, I had to smile and recognize the growth I experienced when I found myself at the front of the hikers on the Lost Lake trail—not out of fear of seeing a bear, but out of excitement of seeing one!"

That's the VITAL difference. We don't eliminate fear. We transform it into curiosity, respect, and readiness.

Four Days, Infinite Moments

Half way into the Lost Lake hike.

Lost Lake Trail

The fan favorite. The showstopper. The hike that had people saying "INSPIRING" and "I was surprised by my ability to tackle such a challenging hike."

Coming down that trail after conquering elevation and embracing Alaska's raw beauty? Pure magic.

Resurrection Bay Charter: On the Water

One perfect day on the water. Fishing. Kayaking. Learning from naturalists. Hanging on beaches. As one guest put it: "Boat day—loved being on the water. We learned a lot and saw a lot."

When the weather cleared, it wasn't just amazing—it was even more amazing. Those unexpected moments of clarity after the mist? Alaska's gift.

The Surprise MVP: Sauna + Cold Plunge

Resurrection Bay cold plunge at a cool 53 degrees.

Nobody expected this to be a highlight, but sometimes the best adventures are the unplanned ones. Post-hike sauna sessions followed by plunging into the bay became the unexpected ritual that had everyone buzzing (multiple times, thank you very much). "I loved the unexpected free time to spend in the sauna and then plunge in the bay (so many times)!"

The Chill Day That Wasn't on the Itinerary

"I also loved the chilled day hike when we went to explore the bay. It was great. No expectations made it even better."

Sometimes the best moments are the ones you don't plan. The ones where you wander, explore, and let Alaska show you what it wants you to see.

The Real Talk: What We're Evolving

Because VITAL is built on getting better, here's what we heard and what we're iterating on:

Communication Clarity: We heard you. WhatsApp + emails + the hub = occasionally overwhelming. We're streamlining. Making it easier to find what you need when you need. Because adventure prep should energize you, not confuse you.

Morning Logistics: Pre-big-hike mornings need more: Coffee. Oatmeal. Bananas. The basics that set you up for success.

Activity Balance: Feedback split on this one—some wanted more challenging hikes throughout instead of three shorter + one epic. Others loved the build and variety. We're exploring both models.

The Transformation Nobody Mentions in Brochures

"I came home feeling more fit and confident in my ability to set more fitness goals."

"It kind of gave me a bit of a spiritual renewal (like you'd have walking the Camino) that I hadn't expected."

"I'm feeling more confident and I plan to keep hiking and staying connected to my physical wellbeing."

This is why we do this. Not just to see glaciers (though glaciers are pretty great). Not just to check Alaska off the bucket list. But to return home different. More confident. More connected. More aware of what you're capable of when you commit, train, and show up.

The VITAL Formula

Here's what we've learned after Kenai:

The training works. Even when it's hard. Even when you modify it. Even when you think you can't.

The people matter. Whether you came with friends or met strangers who became friends, the connections are what make mountains moveable.

The unexpected moments are often the best moments. Sauna plunges. Clearing skies. Front-of-the-pack bear excitement. The things you can't plan are often the things you'll never forget.

Alaska will teach you things you didn't know you needed to learn. About endurance. About weather. About bears. About yourself.

What's Next?

Our Kenai crew is already asking: Japan? Croatia? Switzerland? Dolomites? Kilimanjaro?

Wherever VITAL goes next, one thing is certain: we're bringing the same commitment to getting you ready, surrounding you with experts who know their craft, and creating space for both planned adventures and spontaneous magic.

Because adventure isn't just about the destination. It's about who you become when you say yes, show up, and trust the process.

To our Kenai team: Thank you for your trust, your grit, your honest feedback, and your willingness to embrace Alaska in all its misty, magnificent, unpredictable glory. You showed up. You did the work. You conquered mountains—literally and figuratively.

And to anyone reading this thinking, "Could I do this?"

The answer is yes. With the right training, the right people, and the right mindset, you absolutely can.

Ready to write your own VITAL adventure story?

Let's talk about where you're going next → Catch your first wave, hike a temperate rainforest, scale dramatic peaks?

"Would you recommend this adventure to a friend?"

100% of our Kenai crew said YES.

That's not marketing. That's mountains.
