GRAND CANYON RIM TO RIM

Why This Adventure…

The Grand Canyon isn't a backdrop, it's the challenge itself. Rim to Rim asks you to descend nearly a mile into the earth, cross the river that carved it, and climb back out under your own power, all in a single day.

24 miles. 11,000+ feet of elevation change. One day in the canyon. There's no shortcut through it, and no faking your way there - just three months of expert-led training, a crew that shows up beside you, and the moment you stand on the opposite rim knowing you did something most people never will.

Is this the right challenge for you?

This adventure is rated Level III - Full and multi day treks that test everything — steep vertical climbs and descents, extreme elements, and serious distance. Built for seasoned adventurers with a solid fitness base who are ready to be stretched to their edge, backed by 3 months of expert-led training and a crew training alongside them.

The Rim to Rim is for you if…

You are ready to tackle a full-day, point-to-point trail with extreme heat and demanding descents and ascents. You're a seasoned adventurer with a solid fitness base and experience on long trails.

Willing to take on one of the most challenging single-day hikes out there. Expect 12-15 hours on the trail with breaks, depending on the day and conditions — with steep inclines and declines back-to-back, calling for stamina and mental resilience from start to finish.

Comfortable with heights and ready to build toward big mileage. You can hike up to 8 miles at the start of training, with the capacity to complete 20-25 miles on adventure day.

How VITAL Helps: Our 3-month expert-led training program builds the cardio, strength, and nutrition foundation you need to feel steady, capable, and confident across steep terrain and long days. We also provide a detailed packing list, mindset coaching, and on-trail support so you feel fully prepared for the canyon.

The Rim to Rim is NOT for you if…

You're newer to endurance training or haven't tested yourself on a full-day trail. This isn't a starting point - it's built for people with an existing fitness base and trail experience to train up from.

You have a pre-existing injury or condition affecting your knees, hips, ankles, or joints. Over 10,000 feet of elevation change includes thousands of feet of steep, unforgiving descent. Talk to your doctor about whether this level of demand is safe for you.

You need to hit a specific pace or finish time. Heat, terrain, and elevation slow everyone down. This isn't the trip for a fixed schedule.

Extreme heat is a serious health concern for you. Inner-canyon temperatures regularly exceed 100°F. If you've struggled with heat exhaustion before, talk to your doctor first.

You're not willing to commit to the training. This hike isn't survivable on fitness alone - the 3-month program is required, not optional.

Your Stay

Four nights, two lodges, each earning its place in the journey.

You'll start at Kaibab Lodge, tucked in the North Kaibab National Forest at 8,770 feet - cool air, dark skies, and old-school national park charm. Since the Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge in July 2025, Kaibab has stepped up as the North Rim's welcome for adventurers like you, with new cabins and the same rustic character. Team members share double-occupancy cabins here — the first nights of getting to know your crew before you take on the canyon together.

Then, after crossing rim to rim, you'll finish at the El Tovar Hotel on the South Rim - a historic lodge with cozy porches built for exactly this: sitting with your team, looking out over the canyon you just crossed, and letting it sink in. Double rooms, a beautiful dining room, and Grand Canyon art from decades past round out a stay that feels less like a hotel and more like a fitting close to what you did.

This adventure is part of our new Full Moon Series - timed so your first night at El Tovar falls under a full moon, the canyon lit up as you sit with what you just did.
