The Azores are still being built. Lava fields cool into vineyards, calderas fill with cloud, and whales pass through water that was once hunted and is now protected. Between Fire and Tide is a six-day crossing through the heart of that landscape - the islands of Faial and Pico - moving the way locals do: by ferry and on foot.
This is the reward at the end of a 12-week VITAL Adventure training program. You'll arrive with the strength and endurance to meet each day fully - not just survive it.

What Makes This Adventure Different
Most Azores itineraries center on São Miguel for convenience. We didn't. The islands of Faial and Pico gives you dramatic volcanic terrain, real inter-island travel, and villages still shaped by fishing and whaling rather than tourism. You'll stay in small, locally owned accommodations throughout, and special touches from trail picnics, local vineyards and restaurants.

DAY 1
ARRIVAL FAIAL
Land, settle in, check-in on Faial, the island Azoreans call the "Blue Island" for the hydrangeas that line every road come summer. Settle in, shake off the travel, and get your first look at Horta's legendary marina.
Shake out hike: In the afternoon, we ease into the week with the Between Mounts trail - a short, easy loop between Monte da Guia and Monte Queimado.
The goal is simple: let the landscape do the talking after a long flight.

DAY 2
CAPELINHOS
Hike the westernmost edge of Faial, and the site of the 1957–58 eruption that added new land to the island in real time. It's one of the most striking volcanic landscapes in Europe: black ash, lunar ridgelines, an old lighthouse half-swallowed by ash.
Two ways to do it, depending on your crew's legs that day:
Praia do Norte – Capelinhos - 9 km (5.6 mi), 380m (1,247 ft) elevation gain, 3–4 hours
Praia do Norte – Capelinhos – Varadouro - 15 km (9.3 mi), 530m (1,739 ft) elevation gain, 4–5 hours, continuing along the coast into the Ponta do Varadouro conservation area
Distance / Elevation: 9 km (5.6 mi) / 380m (1,247 ft) gain (short) or 15 km (9.3 mi) / 530m (1,739 ft) gain (long)
Meals: Picnic lunch on the trail, dinner in town - a chance to trade trail stories before tomorrow's big day.

DAY 3
10 VOLCANOES
Morning: The 10 Volcanoes hike (Dez Vulcões) — Faial's signature trail, tracing the ridgeline of volcanic cones that run the spine of the island, with sweeping Atlantic views the whole way.
Picnic-to-go, eaten trailside with a view.
Afternoon: Free. After 8 hours on the ridgeline, this one's earned - rest, explore Horta at your own pace, or just put your feet up before tomorrow's crossing to Pico.
Distance / Elevation: 21 km (13.0 mi) / 660m (2,165 ft) gain
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (picnic-to-go), Dinner

DAY 4
OCEAN
Morning: Whale watching off Faial - sperm whales, dolphins, and (season depending) several migratory species, guided by local marine experts who've spent years reading these waters.
Ferry: We cross the channel to Pico, the island named for the volcano that anchors it.
Afternoon: Check into your Pico accommodation
Hike: Caminho das Voltas trail - 5.8 km (3.6 mi), 410m (1,345 ft) elevation loss, about 2 hours. A gentle way to meet the island before tomorrow's bigger push.

DAY 5
PICO: MOUNTAIN MEETS THE SEA
Morning: The Caminho dos Burros hike - 9 km (5.6 mi), roughly 800m (2,625 ft) of elevation loss, 3–4 hours, descending through Pico's volcanic terrain toward the coast.
Afternoon: A Pico wine tour and tasting - vines grown in currais, small stone-walled plots built directly into the lava rock, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape and one of the most singular wine traditions anywhere. This is where "volcanic soil" stops being a tasting note and starts being something you've hiked across.
Distance / Elevation: 9 km (5.6 mi) / 800m (2,625 ft) loss

DEPARTURE PICO
Time to reflect on the traverse - from Capelinhos' black ash to Pico's vineyards - before heading home with legs that know exactly what they're capable of
